Our own Roosevelt Boulevard (U.S. Rte 1) is considered one of America's most dangerous roads. It consists of twelve lanes and sees local as well as comuter traffic. There were dozens of crashes which resulted in severe injury or death on Roosevelt Boulevard in 2020, many of the victims being pedestrians. In 2020 the City of Philadelphia installed speed cameras along eight sections of Roosevelt Boulevard. Did this impact accident occurrence? YES. Many of the accidents that occur there are the result of vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed. So far, initial reports from the City have shown a 90% reduction in excessive speeding and a 36% drop in car accidents, plus 50% fewer deaths from traffic related accidents in the first seven months after installaation according to Streetlightdata.com.
I hope this data will encourage the City to install more of these cameras. They are a relatively inexpensive way to "encourage" drivers to obey the speed limits.
