Reckless Driving Crackdown by Philadelphia and State Police
Reckless driving in the greater Philadelphia area has risen during the pandemic. With fewer vehicles on roadways and less law enforcement in accident prone areas, Philadelphia pedestrians and drivers have seen a surge of accidents.
High risk locations include Kelly Drive, Benjamin Franklin Parkway, and other local highways which have been plagued with illegal street racing, excessive noise, and unapproved vehicles such as ATVs on roads, sidewalks, and bike paths. Four lane Kelly Drive, long the site of many accidents, experienced four accidents in a sixteen-month period, including one that left three teenagers dead.
Today, drivers beware as the Philadelphia Police Department and the Pennsylvania State Police have launched a joint effort to increase enforcement of the city's traffic laws. The enforcement action began this past summer and resulted in 92 vehicle stops and 65 traffic tickets along Kelly Drive over a two-week period. Law enforcement focused their efforts on stopping speeders, doing away with street racing, and preventing further fatalities.
